U.S. Mint Celebrates Walking Liberty Half Dollar Centennial With Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set

Date:

The U.S. Mint has released a “Best of the Mint” commemorative set honoring the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, pairing a gold coin with a silver medal to mark more than a century since one of American numismatics’ most celebrated designs first appeared.

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar, introduced in 1916, is widely regarded as one of the finest coin designs in U.S. history. Sculptor Adolph Weinman’s depiction of Lady Liberty draped in the American flag, striding toward a rising sun, has endured as an icon — later forming the basis of the American Silver Eagle’s obverse design still used today.

The new “Best of the Mint” set commemorates the design’s origins by pairing two precious-metal pieces: a gold coin and a silver medal, both drawing on the Walking Liberty motif. Sets of this kind are aimed at collectors and numismatists who value the historical and aesthetic significance of classic U.S. coinage alongside the intrinsic metal content.

Commemorative and special-edition Mint products have historically attracted attention from both coin collectors and precious metals buyers. Gold coin releases from the U.S. Mint typically carry a premium over spot gold prices, reflecting production costs, collectability, and limited mintage. Silver medals, while not legal tender, hold appeal for their fine metal content and artistic merit.

The Walking Liberty design holds particular resonance in the silver market. The American Silver Eagle — the world’s best-selling silver bullion coin — has carried a version of Weinman’s obverse since its launch in 1986, making the 1916 original a natural subject for anniversary recognition.

Limited-edition sets from the U.S. Mint often sell quickly, particularly those tied to historically significant designs. Buyers interested in this release should check availability directly through official Mint channels, as secondary-market premiums on sold-out issues can be substantial.

Watch for mintage figures and sell-out timing, which will influence how this set trades on the secondary collector market.
