Mako Mining Expands San Albino Land Package by 3,000 Hectares

Date:

Mako Mining has added 3,000 hectares of ground directly adjacent to its San Albino gold mine in Nicaragua, a move that signals the company is betting on exploration potential beyond its existing resource.

Mako Mining has expanded the footprint of its San Albino gold project in Nicaragua, acquiring 3,000 hectares of ground neighboring the operating mine. The addition meaningfully enlarges the company’s exploration tenure in a region it already knows well.

San Albino has been a focal point for Mako in recent years, producing gold from a high-grade, low-sulfidation epithermal vein system. That geological setting — the same type responsible for several significant gold deposits across Central America — often extends laterally and at depth beyond initial mine boundaries, giving adjacent land real strategic value.

Expanding a land package around an existing producer is a relatively low-risk exploration strategy. A company already operating in an area has drill data, geological models, and established infrastructure that can make new ground cheaper to assess than a greenfield project would be. Whether the new hectares translate into additional resources depends on what exploration turns up, but the proximity to a known ore body improves the odds of finding something meaningful.

For investors watching junior and mid-tier gold miners, land package announcements like this one are worth tracking as early indicators of a company’s growth ambitions. They do not guarantee new discoveries, but they preserve optionality — the ability to drill targets that might otherwise be acquired by a competitor.

Gold prices have remained elevated in 2025 and into 2026, a backdrop that makes exploration-stage assets more attractive and gives producers like Mako stronger cash flow to fund ground acquisition and drilling. Higher gold prices also lower the grade threshold at which a new discovery becomes economically viable, effectively expanding the universe of ore that could one day be mined.

Watch for Mako’s follow-up exploration plans on the new ground to gauge how quickly it intends to drill-test the expanded tenure.
